We couldn’t have chosen a better accomodation for our stopover!

We recently spent 1 night in Murchison Lodge as a stopover on our way from Picton to Arthur’s Pass. Little did we realize that the lodge would be so cozy and comfortable and that our hosts would be so gracious. We had the upstairs large front bedroom which looked out onto the gardens and mountains and was very pleasant. We were encouraged to use the downstairs sitting room with fireplace and our hosts graciously laid and stoked the fire for us. The next morning Rosemary prepared a delicious home-cooked full breakfast for us including her homemade rhubarb and pear compote made from fruit from her garden. The Lodge has many fruit trees on the property as well as an extensive well-tended vegetable garden. Rosemary and Steven were so helpful and knowledgeable in giving us travel suggestions for our route the next day. We visited the Pancake Rocks (Panikiki?… not sure of the spelling) on the west side of South Island heading toward Greymouth. They are incredible layered rock formations along the ocean unlike any that we have ever seen before. There is a delightful Visitors’ Center there and a lovely little cafe too. The loop walk takes only about half and hour but has spectacular views. In summary, I highly recommend Murchison Lodge and only wish that we could have stayed longer. It is top drawer in every way…immaculately clean, charmingly decorated, and very friendly. We couldn’t have chosen a better accomodation for our stopover.

Beautiful Lodge, Great Hosts, Great Breakfast!

I stayed for 4 nights just this past week using the lodge as my base for fishing/exploring. Great feeling as soon as you pull down the driveway. The house is extremely comfortable and the Riverside room was perfect – peaceful and comfortable with a great view. Rosemary and Stephen made me feel very welcome, like one of the family. Can’t beat starting off the day with a delicious, hearty breakfast and coming back to warm, roaring fire after a cold rainy day on the river. Cannot wait to get back!!

Beautiful Lodge, Wonderful Hosts!

We stayed Feb 13 and 14, and I have been meaning to write ever since. This was such a lovely place, a highlight of our trip. We were a party of six, and the welcome was warm, breakfast was delicious, rooms were beautiful, grounds were gorgeous! Murchison itself was fun especially for the rafting we did. Very nice place to eat called Rivers Cafe. Stephen and Rosemary, hosts at Murchison Lodge, went above and beyond. I left a phone charger in our room at checkout, and they kindly mailed it to my next stop. Everything was wonderful. Highly recommend!

Warm Welcome On A Rainy Day!

We had been travelling all day in the rain from Hanmer Springs. Phoned Murchison Lodge on the off chance of a vacancy and we were lucky.
Rosemary welcomed us to a warm comfortable lounge and a cup of tea. Our room was a little dark but spacious and clean, as was the bathroom. Very comfortable bed. We even had our own front door.
It was a shame about the weather as it meant we didn’t see anything of the gardens which I think would have been lovely. We did appreciate the woodburning stove which made the lounge very cosy in the evening. A nice touch was the bar with honesty box too. No television which we didn’t mind at all.
Breakfast was taken around a communal table with other guests. Homegrown fruit and preserves along with a good cooked breakfast. We certainly didn’t go hungry.
Rosemary and Stephen are working hard to make their new venture a success and we wish them all the success possible.

One Of Our Best Accommodation Experiences!

Murchison Lodge was one of the best accommodation experiences we enjoyed during a February tour of the South Island. This very attractive facility has a pleasant alpine flavour and blends wonderfully with the surrounding gardens, pastures and great views to distant ranges. The rooms are spacious, comfortably furnished, with good wi fi. The breakfast was ample and delicious with some nice local touches…. jams, jellies etc. and lots of variety. The verandas provide pleasant areas to read, relax and visit. The hosts, Rosemary and Stephen are most attentive and thoughtful.
Our party of three couples came to Murchison to river raft (one of the best in New Zealand) and hike. Retreating to this lodge after these activities was a perfect way to end the day.

Hospitality Plus!

My wife and I travelled from Golden Bay on northern end of the south island and Murchison seemed an ideal overnight stop on the way to Christchurch. But quality accommodation seemed limited, that was until we came across the Lodge. We were greeted by the owners who live in the smaller house next door. It seems the Lodge is given over to guests with bedrooms downstairs and upstairs. Plenty of space and a great open lodge feel. The Lodge is beautifully spacious and furnished. Our bedroom looked out on the garden and the bed was most comfortable.

For very reasonable price you can help yourself to wines/beer, as well as free tea and coffee – take out onto the veranda that overlooks the garden and nearby farmland. Highlights included a very generous hot breakfast, and the opportunity to walk around a beautiful established garden including small orchard and vegetable garden. There is also a track down to the river. The town is a 10 minute walk away.

The Perfect Find!

We had a short visit but a wonderful time. Our room had a private entrance and inside door to the lounging area. Our room was clean, comfortable and spacious. We have no complaints about our visit. Rosemary and Stephen were the perfect hosts. Very accommodating and helpful. Would love to visit them again. If you need any site seeing tips, they have plenty to offer.
